A Record-Breaking Win in Boston
After the post-All-Star break road trip came to an end, the Celtics returned home to face a Nets team that had been a thorn in their side at times this season. Their last encounter was a double-overtime thriller, and all early indicators showed this game could be similarly exciting. That was until the third quarter where Boston’s defence awoke and combined with their wildly efficient scoring to tear apart the tanking Nets. In the space of just 13 minutes the Celtics rattled off an insane 51-16 run that put this game to bed by the fourth quarter. Yet again Jaylen Brown impressed leading the way with 28 points – including twelve straight in the third quarter. However, the whole roster contributed to the highest efficiency % in the shot clock era (80.8%). A staggering performance from Boston that shows even without a high three-point volume (only 34 attempts) this offence can be potent.
Disasterclass in Denver
When Boston strolled into Denver on Wednesday night, they looked to end a magnificent road trip on a high – after impressive wins against Western Conference Foes (Suns, Lakers, Warriors). Admittedly it was one of the toughest games on the Celtics’ calendar, heading straight from Phoenix to Denver on a back-to-back. Boston actually held a thin lead for the majority of the game, thanks to some hot shooting by Derrick White – who was back in his home state of Colorado. Unfortunately, a combination of tiredness and poor execution down the stretch of the fourth quarter allowed the Nuggets a route back into the lead. Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic dominated down low driving his team to an in the end comfortable 103-84 victory.
The Neemias Queta Game
A lot of the media attention around Sunday night’s game was focused on the speculated return of Jayson Tatum. Disappointingly we did not see Tatum, who sat out for the sixtieth time this season, but we did witness Neemias Queta tear apart the Philadelphia 76ers. With former MVP Joel Embiid siting once again, Queta took the opportunity to just dominate the interior. The Portuguese center controlled the glass hauling in 10 (yes 10!) offensive rebounds as well as a number of dunks and finishes around the rim. He finished the night with an absurd 27 points and 17 rebounds in a game where the Celtics never trailed after the first quarter. Queta was joined in exceeding 20 points by both White and Brown as the Celtics picked up win number 4
